A Temporary Fuel permit is issued in lieu of IFTA licensing for travel within Iowa. The fee for a Temporary Iowa Fuel permit is $20 and is valid for 96 hours. An Unladen Weight Permit is available for for vehicles which are operating unladen and not transferable. The permit is $10 and is valid for 15 days. Permits can be obtained through a permitting service, who will charge an additional processing fee or by faxing application to 515.237.3257.

IOWA IFTA

For vehicles that are not registered under IRP or IFTA, additional permits may be necessary before entering another jurisdiction. Vehicles exceeding limitations on the size and weight are required to obtain a permit.
